The Wine Club of South Africa
Caroline Rillema started working in the wine industry at the prestigious, five-star Carlton Hotel, as a wine steward, in 1979.

She admits that she knew next to nothing about wine at the time, but learnt very quickly in that establishment. She has completed the Cape Wine Academy Diploma Course, and passed her Masters level tasting exams in 1990. In 1985 she worked as PR and marketing manager for Buitenver-wachting, followed by four years at La Motte in the same capacity. In 1997, she opened her own business, which is Caroline's Fine Wine Cellar.

The company's two stores are owned and managed by Caroline, who has 33 years of experience in the wine industry. Her passion has taken her to most of the major wine regions of the world, and she applies her knowledge in selecting the finest South African and imported wines she can find for her customers. You will find a vast selection of Bordeaux, Burgundian, Loire, Champagne, Italian and Spanish wines, as well as some exciting names from the New World.

Stocks are constantly replenished, and every week brings new finds to excite the winelover, whether they be casual imbibers or serious collectors. A natural progression was to start The Wine Club of South Africa, in order to spread the reach to supply winelovers across South Africa with handpicked wines.
David Banford was born in India and completed his primary education at The Cathedral School, Bombay. He continued his education in England attending Cranleigh School, Surrey, followed by Christ's College, Cambridge, where he graduated with an MA in Geography and Economics.

After a management training course, David embarked on his entrepreneurial career at 23 when he founded The Countdown Card - the UK's first loyalty card. After reaching 1 million fee-paying cardmembers by 1980, the company diversified into a complementary range of consumer services with the launch of CPP (credit card protection and identity theft services now with 10 million members globally), Sportsworld Travel and Supreme Awards (corporate incentives).

David relocated to the USA in 1984, where he founded The Wine Society of America. This grew to 100,000 members across the USA, and the company was listed on the NASDAQ in 1990. On return to the UK in 1993, David launched the Sportscard Credit Card company in joint venture with Capital One Bank, which floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2000, and was subsequently sold to UKBetting plc (now part of Sky TV Broadcasting). He also co-founded The Bagel Factory, UK's largest bagel retailer trading out of 50 branches.

Returning to his Bombay roots in 2006, David founded The Wine Society of India together with Steven Spurrier, one of the world's greatest wine authorities, where he served as Chief Executive (www.thewinesocietyofindia.com).

The Wine Society of India was successfully sold as a rapidly expanding business to Direct Wines Holdings (UK) in November 2011, and David relocated with his wife, Kris, to Stellenbosch, South Africa.

David is a sports enthusiast, with particular interest in rugby and marathon running, and has been an avid collector of investment grade Bordeaux since 1975.
